Blood Typing / DNA Typing

As from January 2003, DNA typing has replaced blood typing. This requires taking mane hairs for analysis for parentage validation.

All foals must be DNA typed before acceptance into the Birth Register or Identification Register.

Mares will also need DNA typing if they have not been previously done to enable full parentage validation. Colts/stallions accepted for licensing must also be DNA typed if they have not been previously validated.

A fee per horse is charged (see "Application Forms" for more details) and cheques should be made payable to the Hanoverian Horse Society. Once the Society receives this amount, a contra Society cheque is then made out to the Australian Stud Book. The Australian Stud Book or Equine DNA typing Laboratory will not accept samples nor cheques from individuals. Any unauthorised samples may be destroyed by the laboratory. All applications for DNA typing must be made through the Society.

The Society representative or veterinarian will be required to take the hair samples for analysis. A DNA kit will be used in this regard. Hair samples cannot be sent to the laboratory without this DNA kit.

The results should be available within around six weeks. When results are to hand, the owners receive the original DNA form and any pedigree papers are completed and also forwarded to the owner at this time.
